How to play Four in a Row

Read the aim of Four in a Row, then make your first move. Connect four discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a winner is a draw. Look at what changes after your first action. Read the objective before making your first input. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Connect four discs horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a winner is a draw. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 selects a column.
  2. The disc falls to that column’s lowest empty cell.
  3. Player 2 chooses a column, and turns alternate.
  4. Watch for horizontal, vertical and both diagonal lines.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

A piece falls to the lowest empty space in its column. Four matching pieces in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line win. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Selecting a full column does not use your turn. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
