How to play Mahjong Solitaire

Open Mahjong Solitaire, check the instructions and begin a round. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Look at what changes after your first action.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Controls

Tap two free matching tiles. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
