How to play Canfield Solitaire

Open Canfield Solitaire, check the instructions and begin a round. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Look at what changes after your first action. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. A different version of the game may use a different rule. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
